Stop Pushing Dead Bears Up Trees!
Last night, I attended an intimate event at a friend's house in Raleigh, North Carolina. There were probably around twelve people in attendance, but the event left me feeling excited and hopeful about the future. It was about the possibilities, I guess.
During one conversation, I recall thinking how in sync the participants were. When they talked about the things they'd like to do in their lives, it was almost as if they had invaded my head because I felt the same way. For every new idea came a corresponding, "Uh huh!" and acknowledging nod. It was fascinating!
In retrospect, there are times where one feels like they're pushing "dead bears up trees." To put that another way, no matter how much you try to move people, it's practically impossible when they don't want to be moved.
Life can be so much easier if we stop trying to change other people's behaviors as a means to succeed in our own lives. Instead, let's work and play with people who share the same vision, mission, and beliefs as we do.
I once heard a wise man say, "Stay around the fire." What I understood him to mean by that statement is that we should hang around the people who are doing what we want to do. As a kid, my mother would constantly remind me that we become like those we hang around. "If you want to be a druggie, hang around people who do drugs. If you want to be successful, hang around successful people!" she would say.
Therefore, I leave you with this thought. Instead of trying to change the people around you, how about changing the people around you. Do life with people who share similar interests as you and watch how much more you enjoy the journey.
Stop pushing dead bears up trees and soar with the eagles!
